Learning: Disbudding

Return to Introduction

Photo #1 shows our lateral several weeks later. Here we see the terminal bud in an early growth stage, "pea size". To get the most enjoyable flowers it's necessary to remove the side buds. I know this is painful, but it's very important. This disbudding will allow our flower to reach full potential and express all its color and beauty. Pictures #2 & 3 show the side buds being removed. Picture #4 shows our flower bud ready to swell and grow into a beautiful dahlia.
Note: this disbudding process needs to be done as soon as we can safely handle the little side buds. At this time of removal the scars of the removed buds will be almost invisible.
